Synopsis

What I Loved

Gillig’s writing is lush and atmospheric, pulling readers into a world that feels both dreamlike and nightmarish. The kingdom of Blunder is steeped in fog, superstition, and a sense of impending doom. From the shadowy forests to candlelit castles, the setting is a character in itself—moody, mysterious, and utterly captivating.

2. Unique Magic System

The Providence Cards add a compelling twist to the traditional fantasy magic system. These tarot-like artifacts grant their users supernatural abilities but come with ominous consequences. The way magic is woven into the political and personal struggles of the characters makes for an engaging and original take on power and destiny.

Elspeth is a protagonist who balances vulnerability with resilience. Her internal struggle with the Nightmare—a sinister, sentient force that speaks to her in riddles—is one of the book’s most gripping elements.
